GALVESTON, TX - Galveston County Sheriff Freddie Poor today appointed 31-year law enforcment veteran Mary Johnson as the first woman Chief Deputy in the agency's history.
Johnson joined the Sheriff's Office in 1984 and, after a short stint as the first woman patrol deputy, accepted an assignment in the School Liaison Division, a group she eventually came to lead on her promotion to Captain in 2004. In 2009, she took command of the 276-employee Corrections Division.
Johnson holds a Master Peace Officer certification as well as a degree in Criminology, and has received numerous accolades from civic and law enforcement organizations throughout her career.
Chief Johnson has assumed the duties of Chief Deputy of Administration, the position recently vacated by Donny Allen, who retired after 30 years of service.
